One of my favorite things to do when I was a child, was to play with the old upright piano tucked back with storage boxes in an unheated cottage behind our house. No one was there and I was free to invent and to create impressions and visions by playing the keys as well as the strings.
Later at age 10, I began to study flute and learned to replace my invented notation with readable notes. I pursued studies in classical flute with fine flutists and teachers including Paul Renzi, Lawrence Duckles, Gary E. Gray in the San Francisco Bay Area, and Pierre Cazaux in France.
I also tried my
hand at music composition from time to time and later in life
returned to school studying at the Naropa Institute in Boulder,
Colorado. There I majored in music performance, and grew more
interested in composition. After graduating from Naropa I was
fortunate to be asked to play on the albums of composer/pianist/
bassoonist Bill Douglas for the Hearts of Space label. Playing Bill's
beautiful music and working with him has been the inspiration to
write and record some albums of my own. With the help of my husband
Ralph Cuellar, classical guitarist, we produced a first album, ‘On
the Wing.’
Newly released are two new CDs, 'Branching Out' and 'Gifts and Celebrations,' which feature my new compositions and arrangements for flute and friends including harp, piano, guitar, oud, voice, bassoon, bass, and percussion.
